Using the songs from “This is Where I Live” music kit; “I say What I Mean, I Mean What I Say”, “Unity Brings Peace” “Compassion” “Hello How are You Courtesy”, “I am Trustworthy”, “Respect” and more, this team brings their love of music, teaching skills, and belief in community to LAUSD.

Description of Arts Learning Plan: This 4-week program will involve twelve 3rd, 4th, 5th grade classrooms and their teachers at each school in “This is Where I Live” a community sing-a-long. This includes: 1) an hour collaborative planning meeting with staff; 2) 1-1½ hour interactive Professional Development Workshop; 3) 3 - ½ hour segments of instruction for each rd, 4th & 5th grade class in your school (up to 12 classes); 4) three 35-min interactive ‘This is Where I Live’ sing-a-long concerts/ assemblies.

Instructional: Each class will learn 2 songs in preparation for our sing-along concert. Working with breathing techniques, vocal and memorization skills, rhythm, song form, musical styles from diverse cultures and simple choreography students will learn the songs with their teachers and our artist teacher. Each class will continue rehearsing with their teacher 5-10 minutes daily in the classroom.  The program is completed by an interactive sing-along concert on Friday of the last week.

Performance/Demonstration: Three 35-minute interactive sing-along concert/assemblies will complete this program. They will be scheduled on Friday of week 4. Each class will sing the songs they have learned. There will be opportunities for small group singing, solos, and spoken word introductions using famous quotes.  The program will begin with everyone singing the song, “This is Where I Live” together.  A visual PowerPoint presentation of the song lyrics will encourage everyone to participate in singing.

Professional Development: The first part of the Professional Development Workshop will be working with basic vocal technique and simple methods of teaching a song.  This will show teachers, some of whom may not feel musical, how to select and teach a song to their students.  By learning these techniques, teachers will then have the confidence to integrate 3 minutes a day of singing into the classroom as an everyday activity, thereby enriching their lives and the lives of their students.  The 2nd segment of the workshop will be spent getting familiar with the songs for the sing-along concert.  The teachers of each grade level will pick a character building song that fits with what they are currently teaching.

Collaborative Planning Meeting: We will work through the scheduling and logistics of the program in a one hour planning meeting.  We will meet with the school administrators and teacher representatives to tailor the program for their school.
